EPAA Golf Outing 2011

Submitted by Thomas Haller, July 27, 2011

It was very hot, the golf course was tough but in great condition, and the post-golf clubhouse camaraderie and sit-dinner were just as it is always is when EPs get together—great!  Not to be missed next year!  Nearly 50 EPs gathered at the Grove City Country Club for the annual EP Golf Outing.  We played a scramble and ten different EPs won prizes for their efforts on the links.  It truly was a great time.  Don’t miss it next year.

EPAA Golf Outing Is Less Than TWO Weeks Away—Register Now!

By Thomas Haller on Sunday, July 10, 2011

Here are the details for participating in the 2011 EPAA golf outing on Saturday, July 23, 2011 at the Grove City County Club. We will use a shotgun start beginning at 12:30 PM and you have the option of playing either one of two formats. Your foursome may choose either to play (1) a best ball format where the ball played is the best shot of the four or (2) each member of the foursome plays his own ball on every shot and four scores are reported individually. The decision as to what format each foursome will play must be decided in advance of the day of the outing. So here are your action items:

E-mail or call Bill Hladio at hladio.bill@gmail.com (724-709-9182). The cost for the day is $90.00 and includes green fees, cart, prizes, and dinner. Fees are payable at the pro shop prior to the tee off time. A driving range is available on site, so plan to arrive early as we will all begin play at the same time. A collared golf shirt is required by the club to play and there are no exceptions. EP golf shirts and hats can be ordered in advance from John Miller at JohnMiller87@MSN.com for pickup and payment at the country club.

If you are a single or do not have a full foursome, register with Bill Hladio and let him know what format you would like to play and your year of graduation. We will assign everyone to a foursome based on that information. If you need to contact the GC Country Club for any additional information, the telephone number is 724-748-3493. Register and confirm your intent to participate today in the EP Golf Outing on the 23rd of July. EP Actives are welcome and encouraged to play in the EPAA Golf Outing. We are looking forward to a great turnout of EPs.

By Thomas Haller on Sunday, July 10, 2011

JAMESTOWN, NY — John E. “Dutch” Leonard, 73, of 15 Catlin Avenue, died Wednesday May 4, 2011, in WCA Hospital. He was a loving husband, father, Pap, Papa and friend to so many. He was born July 29, 1937, in Sharon, PA, a son of the late Earl and Mary Bray Leonard.  He was a graduate of Butler High School and Grove City College. Dutch was the first 1000 point scorer and set the standards for those who followed.

Prior to his retirement in 1997, he was employed for over 37 years by the Jamestown Board of Education. He truly touched so many lives as a high school math teacher and also as the “Coach” of the boys high school basketball team for 18 years.  A gifted athlete, he was inducted in to the Butler Sports Hall of Fame in 1981 and Grove City College Hall of Fame in 2009. He was a member of Lakewood Rod and Gun Club and American Red Cross Century Club. He was an ever present fixture at The Pub in downtown Jamestown which he enjoyed weekly.  He was an avid sport fan especially of the Boston Celtics, Boston Red Sox and Jamestown High School Red Raider Boys Basketball Team.

Surviving are four children Susan Lewellen (Dave Johnson) of Jamestown, John (Kim) Leonard of Coconut Creek, FL, Kimberly (James) Fletcher of Canandaigua, NY and Amy (Michael) Cole of Houston, TX; seven granddaughters Brittany Lewellen of Jamestown, Alexandra Senglaub of Canandaigua, Taylor Leonard of Knoxville, TN, Marissa Cole of Houston, Katie Leonard of Knoxville, Grace Fletcher of Canandaigua and Brooke Kneer of Coconut Creek and a brother Richard Leonard of Butler, PA.  Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife the former Chervyl Cavalero, whom he married August 1, 1959, and who died December 19, 1996.

The Grove City Years

“Dutch” Leonard launched his collegiate basketball career in 1955, started 72 of 75 games, played for three different coaches and in his fourth season, became the first Grove City College player to eclipse the 1,000-point mark. The talented guard held the career scoring record with 1,013 points for three more years after his graduation in 1959. His 41 points in a 104-95 win over Fenn College (now Cleveland State) set a single-game scoring record which lasted for nine years. In addition, his record of 23 consecutive free throws made lasted for several decades. He co-captained the cage team in his junior and senior years and earned Omicron Delta Kappa Sportsman of the Year as a junior in 1958.  Following his senior year, Leonard played in a “Little Guys-Big Guys” benefit game for Maurice Stokes at Pitt’s Fitzgerald Field House with seniors from the Tri-State area before a crowd of 5,528. Leonard scored six points in his Grove City uniform to help the Little Guys (6-feet and under) defeat the Big Guys (6-5 and over), 79-76.
