To: Brothers of Epsilon Pi

5 December 2011

The purpose of this letter is to offer some insights into what Jack Schlossnagel meant to the life of the Epsilon Pi Fraternity. I was extremely saddened to receive the news from Tom Haller that Jack had died and have been thinking about my relationship with Jack as a professor and as a friend during my time at Grove City College 1956-1960.

To begin with, I met Jack as he was my calculus professor in 1958 and we immediately developed a rapport as he had been recently serving as a 1/Lt in the US Army and I was an ROTC Cadet in the USAF intent on becoming a USAF Officer thru the Grove City College AFROTC Program. Turns out that both Jack and I were avid trout fisherman, and after I had Jack for calculus we became fast friends and fished the many trout streams around Grove City together. We often discussed things beyond GCC and Jack’s advice was always to look at the “big picture” and beyond graduation from GCC.

It was in 1958 or 1959 that we were in need of a faculty advisor and during one of my trips fishing with him, I asked Jack if he would consider becoming an advisor to Epsilon Pi. I further asked Jack to speak with Dr. Guthrie, from whom he could gain a unique insight into our fraternity. It suffices to say that Jack Schlossnagel was a very great advisor and friend to Epsilon Pi and the many, many young men who are now our alumni. All of us who knew Jack and who were positively influenced by this wonderful gentlemen and friend, are truly saddened by his death.

After my retirement from the USAF in 1990, I spoke with Jack at length regarding a possible position at GCC, which I had discussed with the then President, Dr. McKenzie. As a result of Jack’s advice and counsel, I proceeded to accept a position in the Private Sector, a decision I have never regretted and thanks to Jack’s advice, I went far beyond my wildest expectations and retired in 2003 as a Vice President from Parsons Aviation of Pasadena, CA. Whatever Jack could do for any of the brothers of Epsilon Pi only required that we ask him, and a straight, unvarnished reply would be soon forthcoming

Brothers, we have lost a great friend, stalwart companion and a truly one of a kind guy; someone who we should treasure knowing for the rest of our lives. Jack was the epitome of “Brothers Working for the Good of All.” My thoughts go out to Jean and their children, with the wish that you who are active EP’s at the College offer to help her with anything she needs—-after all, that is what Jack did for us!

Warm regards to all,

BRUCE W. JOHNSON, Colonel, USAF Retired

Grove City College and Epsilon Pi Class of 1960

Because Grove City’s Homecoming is scheduled very early this year on the weekend of September 23-25, coupled with the fact that September is usually a very busy month for everyone, we need your help. We usually have in excess of 120 people for the EP Saturday night dinner, but our dinner reservations are confirming very slowly this year. If you are planning to attend the EP Homecoming Dinner at the Legacy Banquet Center after the football game on the 24th, please make your reservation with Dr. Ralph Carlson this week. We need to let the Legacy know at least seven days in advance of the event and since Homecoming is less than three weeks away, time is of the essence. Contact Dr. Ralph Carlson via e-mail at RECarlson@GCC.EDU or by telephone at 724-458-2994 and make your reservation!

If you are interested in playing golf on Friday, September 23rd at the Grove City Country Club, contact Bill Hladio at 724-709-9182 or by e-mail at hladio.bill@gmail.com. For early arrivals on Friday the 23rd of September, plan to meet in the Grill Room of the Grove City Country Club after 5:30 PM. We will not be having dinner at the country club, but by gathering there, informal plans for the evening can emerge from that point. On Saturday the 24th, lunch at the EP Tent will available from 11:30 AM on at a cost of $10.00 per person.

When we go live, it would be an ideal time for you to go in and make sure your EPAA profile is accurate and up-to-date. There are a number of EPs who have yet to activate their profile and doing this saves time, money, and energy. Creating your profile would be a huge contribution to the accuracy and quality of our database. Please help us out and update your profile.

Homecoming 2011

Epsilon Pi is eagerly looking forward to Homecoming this year. Early arrivals in town on Friday, September 23rd can gather in the Grill Room of the Grove City Country Club after 6:00 PM. If there is a large enough turnout of EPs and wives planning to attend, we will arrange for a small private room and light hors d’oeuvres. However, we need to make that reservation very soon. If you plan to attend the EP gathering on Friday evening, contact Bill Hladio and let him know of your plans: hladio.bill@gmail.com or by phone at 724-709-9182.

On Saturday, September 24th, the gathering place will be the EP Tent located on lower campus behind the football press box. The tent will be available from 10:30 AM until the football game is over. A box lunch and soft drinks will be available at a cost of $10.00 per person.

The EP Dinner will be held at the Legacy Banquet Center just west of Grove City. The evening will begin at approximately 5:30 PM with a social hour followed by dinner and program. This year we will be honoring all those EPs in the various Halls of Fame at GCC. We hope that a number of EP Hall Of Fame members will attend the dinner. In addition, the Guthrie Scholarship winners will be presented with their awards. Cost of the dinner is $35.00 per person and reservations are required. Contact Dr. Ralph Carlson for reservations at RECarlson@GCC.EDU. Checks are payable to EPAA and can be mailed to Dr. Ralph Carlson, Grove City College, 100 Campus Drive, Grove City, PA 16127.

Dwight Guthrie Scholarship Endowment Continues To Accelerate Rapidly

As of July 31st, the TOTAL EPAA Guthrie Scholarship Endowment Fund has now grown to $138,717.99. The current campaign, now in its 31st month, has generated $94,191.38 since it began in January 2009. Equally important, there is $22,000 in additional contributions representing future pledges to the Guthrie Scholarship (wills, trusts, and pledges) that the EPAA is aware of and documented in writing by the donors and shared with us by the college. The 22K in future contributions is not counted in today’s total value, but when it is collected, our EPAA total will grow to $160,717.99. Great job!

Quite impressive on the surface, but as of July 31st only 17% of the EPAA total membership has stepped up during the past 31 months. The average gift within the current campaign is $719.00 per donor. To the 131 individual donors, many of whom have made multiple contributions, thank you very much for your generosity. The EPAA Octagon Club now has 36 members. These are EPs who have contributed more than $1,000.00 to the Guthrie Scholarship Endowment.

To those who have not made a contribution to the Guthrie for whatever reason, please reconsider your decision and board this train! It is moving and building speed and we need every EP to “step up” and find “your” respective reason to act in order to achieve our goal. If nothing else, consider it an IOU for the “great times” we all experienced as EPs, regardless of when we were in school. Our EPAA Guthrie Scholarship remains unique and, with your help, will clearly sustain itself within the GCC community. The goal is to get this effort to 200K by the end of 2011! Use the attached Guthrie Donor Form and join the drive to reach and surpass the 200K goal.

Zach Gross is the 2011 winner of the Dwight and Julia Family Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to the EP rising senior with the highest GPA. Zach is also one of the recipients of this year’s EPAA Guthrie Scholarship awarded at the upcoming Homecoming dinner.

EPAA 2011 Golf Outing Review

This summer the EPAA Golf Outing was held at the GC Country Club and was well received based on the feedback from nearly all of the participants. The golf course was challenging, 10 different EPs took home prizes, and the facilities, the food, and the sit down dinner provided a great venue for EPs to gather and enjoy the day.

As a result of this feedback, we have booked the EP Golf Outing for 2012 at the Grove City Country Club with one important date change. The 2012 EP Golf Outing will return to it traditional date of the last Saturday in July next year—July 28, 2012—so lock in that date now and plan now to be there. One note—we had some “no shows” for the golf outing, who “forgot” to cancel, and that resulted in the EPAA being assessed for “no show” dinner reservations—the only negative in what was a really fun afternoon on a quality golf course.

EP Website

The EP Website, epsilonpi.com, is nearing completion of a major re-design. Look for an announcement within days of the availability of the brand new EP website.

The intention is to use it as a repository for all important EP documents and historical data. It will continue to house the EP directory, as well as the financial reports for the Guthrie Scholarship Endowment, EPAA dues reports, and the operating statements for the EPAA. We urge you to visit the site and update your profile, as there are still quite a few EPs who have never created a profile. You can pay your association dues using PayPal on the new website which is very convenient and saves us money for mailings, printing, etc. You will notice a Facebook icon on the website. In the future, you can immediately go from the website to our EPAA Facebook page.

New EPAA Facebook Page

In March, we kicked off the Epsilon Pi Alumni Association Facebook page with Mike Nelson ‘80 serving as our administrator. So far, we’ve had 173 EPs and friends of EPs (widows of EPs are particularly welcome) to join the EPAA Facebook site. If you are already on Facebook as an individual member, please join our EPAA group. The intention is to use Facebook for posting announcements (such as the EP Golf Outing, Homecoming, HOF dinner, etc), uploading of pictures of EP events and activities, blogging, time-sensitive announcements such as obituaries, and items that would meet the need for timely communication. Facebook will also be an excellent vehicle to learn what is going on in the fraternity, as almost all the actives are already on Facebook. Between Facebook, e-mail blasts, and the EP Website, technology should allow everybody in the EP Nation to be up-to-date and informed.

Miscellaneous

We have a lot of initiatives going right now so payment of your annual dues is welcome and appreciated. In a matter of days, you will be able to pay dues on the new upgraded EP Website electronically using PayPal. However, if you wish to write a check, send it to Dr. Ralph Carlson at the college address listed previously. Dues are $25.00 for one year; $60.00 for three years. See you at Homecoming September 23-25.

It was very hot, the golf course was tough but in great condition, and the post-golf clubhouse camaraderie and sit-dinner were just as it is always is when EPs get together—great! Not to be missed next year! Nearly 50 EPs gathered at the Grove City Country Club for the annual EP Golf Outing. We played a scramble and ten different EPs won prizes for their efforts on the links. It truly was a great time. Don’t miss it next year.

By Thomas Haller on Sunday, July 10, 2011

Here are the details for participating in the 2011 EPAA golf outing on Saturday, July 23, 2011 at the Grove City County Club. We will use a shotgun start beginning at 12:30 PM and you have the option of playing either one of two formats. Your foursome may choose either to play (1) a best ball format where the ball played is the best shot of the four or (2) each member of the foursome plays his own ball on every shot and four scores are reported individually. The decision as to what format each foursome will play must be decided in advance of the day of the outing. So here are your action items:

E-mail or call Bill Hladio at hladio.bill@gmail.com (724-709-9182). The cost for the day is $90.00 and includes green fees, cart, prizes, and dinner. Fees are payable at the pro shop prior to the tee off time. A driving range is available on site, so plan to arrive early as we will all begin play at the same time. A collared golf shirt is required by the club to play and there are no exceptions. EP golf shirts and hats can be ordered in advance from John Miller at JohnMiller87@MSN.com for pickup and payment at the country club.

If you are a single or do not have a full foursome, register with Bill Hladio and let him know what format you would like to play and your year of graduation. We will assign everyone to a foursome based on that information. If you need to contact the GC Country Club for any additional information, the telephone number is 724-748-3493. Register and confirm your intent to participate today in the EP Golf Outing on the 23rd of July. EP Actives are welcome and encouraged to play in the EPAA Golf Outing. We are looking forward to a great turnout of EPs.

By Thomas Haller on Sunday, July 10, 2011

JAMESTOWN, NY — John E. “Dutch” Leonard, 73, of 15 Catlin Avenue, died Wednesday May 4, 2011, in WCA Hospital. He was a loving husband, father, Pap, Papa and friend to so many. He was born July 29, 1937, in Sharon, PA, a son of the late Earl and Mary Bray Leonard. He was a graduate of Butler High School and Grove City College. Dutch was the first 1000 point scorer and set the standards for those who followed.

Prior to his retirement in 1997, he was employed for over 37 years by the Jamestown Board of Education. He truly touched so many lives as a high school math teacher and also as the “Coach” of the boys high school basketball team for 18 years. A gifted athlete, he was inducted in to the Butler Sports Hall of Fame in 1981 and Grove City College Hall of Fame in 2009. He was a member of Lakewood Rod and Gun Club and American Red Cross Century Club. He was an ever present fixture at The Pub in downtown Jamestown which he enjoyed weekly. He was an avid sport fan especially of the Boston Celtics, Boston Red Sox and Jamestown High School Red Raider Boys Basketball Team.

Surviving are four children Susan Lewellen (Dave Johnson) of Jamestown, John (Kim) Leonard of Coconut Creek, FL, Kimberly (James) Fletcher of Canandaigua, NY and Amy (Michael) Cole of Houston, TX; seven granddaughters Brittany Lewellen of Jamestown, Alexandra Senglaub of Canandaigua, Taylor Leonard of Knoxville, TN, Marissa Cole of Houston, Katie Leonard of Knoxville, Grace Fletcher of Canandaigua and Brooke Kneer of Coconut Creek and a brother Richard Leonard of Butler, PA. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife the former Chervyl Cavalero, whom he married August 1, 1959, and who died December 19, 1996.

The Grove City Years

“Dutch” Leonard launched his collegiate basketball career in 1955, started 72 of 75 games, played for three different coaches and in his fourth season, became the first Grove City College player to eclipse the 1,000-point mark. The talented guard held the career scoring record with 1,013 points for three more years after his graduation in 1959. His 41 points in a 104-95 win over Fenn College (now Cleveland State) set a single-game scoring record which lasted for nine years. In addition, his record of 23 consecutive free throws made lasted for several decades. He co-captained the cage team in his junior and senior years and earned Omicron Delta Kappa Sportsman of the Year as a junior in 1958. Following his senior year, Leonard played in a “Little Guys-Big Guys” benefit game for Maurice Stokes at Pitt’s Fitzgerald Field House with seniors from the Tri-State area before a crowd of 5,528. Leonard scored six points in his Grove City uniform to help the Little Guys (6-feet and under) defeat the Big Guys (6-5 and over), 79-76.
