Major General Robert C. Kane ‘79 To Receive The Jack Kennedy Alumni
Achievement Award Homecoming Weekend October 8-9.

By Thomas Haller on Thursday, February 18, 2010

Maj. Gen. Robert C. Kane ’79 is one of four distinguished GCC graduates to receive this year’s Jack Kennedy Memorial Alumni Achievement Award during Homecoming festivities the weekend of October 8 and 9.   Major General Kane has had a highly decorated career in the Air Force and is currently Commandant of the Air War College at Maxell Air Force Base.  He began his Air Force career in 1980 after receiving his commission through the ROTC program at GCC.

His distinguished career is documented in the GCC Homecoming brochure and I urge you to take time to read of his numerous accomplishments and honors.  He will always be remembered by those who attended last year’s EP Homecoming dinner.  At that time, he was the commanding general of the Coalition Air Force Transition Team in Bagdad, Iraq.  Through the miracle of modern technology, he was “skyped” in from Bagdad to address the attendees at the EP dinner.  In addition to his remarks concerning his duties, he also presented the Guthrie Scholarship awards to Mark Scriven ‘10, Andrew DiDonado ‘10, and Jake Patton ‘10—an evening not soon to be forgotten by the Guthrie recipients or anyone in attendance.  Major General Kane has graciously agreed to return in person this year to address our Homecoming Dinner the evening of Saturday, October 9.  It is a special privilege to have him appear at our dinner so plan to attend and to honor this outstanding EP!

On behalf of the EP Nation, congratulations to Major General Robert Kane, his wife Katy, and their two children on his Kennedy Alumni Achievement Award from GCC and thank you for your distinguished service to our country!

Grove City College’s annual Homecoming is Saturday, October 9th and is really only a short 4 weeks away.  Make your plans to attend this weekend and participate in the EP festivities.  The EP Tent will be located on lower campus right behind the football press box.  We will open at 10:00 AM and a buffet lunch will be served following the Homecoming parade.  Shortly after the conclusion of the Homecoming football game with Thomas More College, EPs and their guests will gather at 6:00 PM at the Legacy Banquet Center near Grove City for the annaul EP Homecoming Dinner and presentation of the Guthrie-Nivison Scholarship winners for this year.  Details will be forthcoming and a dinner reservation form will be e-mailed to you shortly for attending Homecoming.  Make your plans now to attend.

Marcus Magister Wins Guthrie Family Scholarship

Each year the Guthrie Family Scholarship, established by Julia and Dwight Guthrie, is awarded to the EP and the Gamma Sig senior who has achieved the highest GPA.  This year the Guthrie Family Scholarship has been awarded to Marcus Magister ’11 for his outstanding performance in the classroom.  In addition to his academic achievements, Marcus is a former EP pledge master and was recently named to the Division III All-America Baseball Team as a catcher.  A graduate of Hampton High School just north of Pittsburgh, he has been a great leader in the Epsilon Pi Fraternity.  His future plans include medical school to begin his career as a surgeon.  Congratulations, Marcus!

Jim Keefer Memorial Golf Tournament

The 2010 Epsilon Pi Alumni Golf Outing will be held on Saturday, July 31, 2010 at the Pine Grove Golf Course on Barkeyville Road and Rt. 28 in Grove City.  You may call the course at (724) 458-8394 or visit them on the web at www.pinegrovegolf.com for directions if you are making the trip for the first time.  Tee times begin at 8:40 am and go off every 8 minutes after that.  We should have everyone off by 10:30 am at the latest.  That means you can have a wonderful day playing golf with old friends and still make it home by 7:00 pm for some quality family time.  Please indicate your tee time preference when you call or email your RSVP.  We will try to accommodate everyone’s desired starting times.  The cost this year will be $60.00 per participant.  This covers your golf, carts, prizes, lunch at the turn, beverages and dinner afterwards.  We will collect the entry fee that morning when you sign in.  We will also collect dues if you choose to them pay them at that time.  Also, please remember the driving range as you turn into the course off the main road.  I would recommend arriving 45 minutes early to stretch and hit a bucket of balls before the round.

Please RSVP to me, Steven Hamel, at (412) 561-1065 or my cell phone at (412) 310-2730 by July 24th or e-mail me at steven_hamel@msn.com.  Please let me know if you are able to donate prizes when you RSVP.  Thank you and I look forward to seeing you that day.

EPs Conclude Another Highly Successful School Year

EPs Win Fourth Consecutive IF All-Sports Championship

May 8th was Parents Day at Grove City College and a big day for Epsilon Pi as the fraternity was awarded the IF All-Sports Trophy for the fourth consecutive year.  During the year, the EPs won the IF Football and Basketball Championships and placed in three other IF sports to secure the championship.  In addition, this spring the EP Softball Team won the championship which is counted toward next year’s IF All-Sports Championship, so we are off to a great start for making it five in a row.

Additional individual recognition came to Andrew DIDonato during the ceremonies on May 8th as he was named GCC Sportsman of the Year.  While playing quarterback for the past four years, DiDonato broke virtually every offensive record in Grove City football history at his position.  Congratulations to Andrew on a truly great college career.  In addition, DiDonato was a finalist for Senior Man of the Year.  He did not win that award, but being a finalist speaks volumes about the quality of the man, as well as his fellow nine EP who seniors who will graduate this month.  Andrew graduated with Honors in Business Management along with Mark Scriven, outgoing EP President, who graduated cum laude with Honors in Accounting.  To all the senior EPs, thank you for your leadership and leaving the fraternity in a better place because you were a member of Epsilon Pi.  Well done!

Finally, and somewhat predictably, the EPs did participate in the All Campus Sing (formerly known as Greek Sing), but did not place.

Guthrie Scholarship

Nine EP juniors and seniors applied for the Guthrie/Nivison Scholarship for the next school year and three were selected to receive a scholarship award.  A committee of three EPAA Board Members interviewed each of the nine applicants and the winners are:  Marcus Magister, Tyler Nichols, and Zach Summy.  They will be formally presented their scholarship awards at the EP Homecoming dinner this fall.  The Guthrie Scholarship has become highly competitive and this year’s list of candidates was most formidable.  All nine candidates are most worthy and Dr. Guthrie would have been extremely proud of each one of them and their respective achievements.

The total Guthrie Endowment has now passed the 100,000 dollar milestone.  The current on-going campaign, which began in late December of 2008, has resulted in contributions of $57,802.14 from 96 individual donors (quite a few have made more than one donation) for an average gift of $602.10 per donor.  It should be gratefully acknowledged that three EPs have made a contribution in excess of $5,000.00.  Thanks to them in particular for their great generosity and to all who have stepped up to increase the size of the Guthrie endowment.

The 96 individual donors, however, represent just 12.8% of our total estimated EPAA database.  For the year 2010, we have received 13 gifts totaling $7,917.50 as of April 30, 2010.  Bottom line—we need more participation meaning we need more EPs to step up and increase the percentage of donors.  If we could increase the number of donors to 25% of the total database, it would be another record year of giving.  Give it a shot!  Many, many thanks to all who have donated and for your generosity.  A Guthrie Scholarship Gift form is included with this letter for your convenience.

Golf Outing

Remember, the annual EP golf outing is Saturday, July 31st at the Pine Grove Golf Course in Grove City.  Gather your foursome and get it on your schedule.   Many EPs have turned this event into a weekend golf outing playing both Friday and Saturday.  For those arriving early, we are thinking of having a Friday evening reception/activity.  More on that later and more details will be forthcoming from Steve Hamel.

EPAA Dues

Dues are always readily accepted and can easily be paid on the EP website using PayPal.   This is the most efficient method of collecting dues and the EPAA Board urges you to use this cost effective, convenient way to pay your dues.  Dues are $25.00 for one year, $60.00 for three years.  Directions and the options are clearly spelled out on the EP website and easy to follow.  Each time we do a mailing via the U.S. Post Office, it costs over $300.00 to mail the entire database an invoice.  Speed, ease, convenience—try it—go to epsilonpi.com.  Dues are very important this year, as the college has decided to invoice the EPAA for the EP tent rental on lower campus for Homecoming.  Everyone seems to agree this is a premier location and we should continue with the plan as a central gathering point for Homecoming.  The tent rental is $1,000.00, so we need your assistance.   We are certain the tent space we have adopted would be quickly claimed by other organizations should we not be able to fund the rental.

Three EPs Inducted into GCC Hall of Fame
By Thomas Haller on Wednesday, February 03, 2010

(L) Diver Earl Mays ’62 and Soccer Goalie Dick Manley ‘67

Three EPs, Earl Mays ’62, Dick Manley ’67, and Tom Shear ’67 were inducted into the GCC Hall Of Fame at ceremonies and a dinner hosted by the college. An audience of over 200 people, including more than 20 EPs, attended the event. Mays was a terrific diver for Coach Jim Longnecker’s swimming teams. Manley was honored for his feats as a soccer goalie and Shear, honored posthumously, was a football and track star for the Wolverines. Each inductee played a major role in his chosen sport for four years while at Grove City. The three new members of the HOF class of 2010 brings the total number of EPs now in the Hall of Fame to 13 in the first four years. Congratulations!

Written by: Thomas Haller Monday, January 25, 2010

The annual EP Alumni basketball game has been scheduled for Saturday, March 6th, from noon till 3:00 PM in the main college arena. Plan to arrive early and prepare for a highly competitive game with the actives. We will need a strong contingent of alumni to counteract the youth and stamina of the actives.  Steve Hamel is coordinating the event and he can be reached at steven_hamel@msn.com if any additional details are required.

Record Giving Year As EPAA Guthrie Scholarship Endowment More Than Doubles in
Written by: Thomas Haller Friday, January 15, 2010

In 2009, the EPAA Guthrie Scholarship Endowment Fund grew by $49,885.00 to reach a total endowment of $93,951.00 as of December 31, 2009.  This is by far the most money ever contributed in one year since the Guthrie Scholarship Endowment was formalized in 1993.  The gifts were contributed by a total of 104 different people representing EPs, widows of EPs, and friends of EPs.  A few people contributed more than one time during the year.  The average gift per donor was $480.00 which speaks directly to the generosity of the EP Nation and two significant contributors, in particular, who both contributed more than $5,000 each to our fund. Congratulations and thank you to all who honored the memory of Dr. Guthrie and the great enduring legacy of the Epsilon Pi Fraternity this past year.

With nearly 750 former EP’s living, the 104 contributors represent only 13% of our total EPAA database.  If we could increase the number of donors to 25% (one in four EPs) we could easily have another record year in 2010.  Whatever the reason, if you are not one of the 104 who stepped up and made a contribution in 2009, please consider it this year. Let’s make it happen in 2010!

Year-End Guthrie Scholarship Contributions
Written by: Thomas Haller Saturday, December 19, 2009

A friendly reminder that if you wish to make a contribution to the Guthrie Scholarship Fund and claim a tax deduction for 2009, your check must be dated no later than December 31, 2009 and your letter must also be postmarked no later than December 31, 2009.  This is important because the college administration will be on vacation during the latter part of December and to insure you can claim a tax deduction for a 2009 contribution, the above procedure must be followed

Homecoming 2009
4/7/2009

Homecoming will be the centerpiece of 90th anniversary celebration.  Here is what we have in mind—on Friday, October 2nd, we are reserving times for foursomes at the Grove City Country Club.  We are planning an informal reception, hopefully at or near the country club from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.  You are on your own for dinner on Friday night, and we encourage you to gather with EPs from your era and have dinner.  We are working with the college to obtain a block of hotel rooms for both Friday and Saturday nights for those of you coming from out of town.

On or about the 1st of May, we will launch an entirely new version of the EP website.  The new website will contain many new features designed to be more user-friendly and to offer many benefits of communicating and providing cost effective services to the EPAA membership.

The Guthrie Scholarship Fund Drive
4/7/2009

The Guthrie Scholarship Fund drive was launched just after Thanksgiving and as of March 31st, we have received 73 individual gifts resulting in contributions of $21,809.00.  While everyone is aware of the economic challenges of our day, we anticipate contributions to increase mid-year and particularly as we approach our 90th anniversary celebration at Homecoming.  If you are on the three-year plan, you will receive an invoice for the second installment in June.  Many thanks to those who have contributed to date.  The 73 gifts represent just a fraction under a 10% return from our initial mailing to 750 EPs.  The average dollar contribution per individual for 73 gifts is $312.46.

New Epsilon Pi Octagon Club Established
4/7/2009

The Octagon Club was created and approved in late 2008 by the EPAA Board of Directors to recognize those EPs, EP widows, and friends of the fraternity who contribute, or have already contributed $1,000.00 or more to the EPAA Dwight Guthrie Scholarship Fund.  Membership in the Octagon Club is both retroactive and cumulative, meaning it includes those who already have contributed $1,000.00 or more since the scholarship originated in 1993.  In addition, cumulative membership means that membership in the Octagon Club can be achieved when the total of one’s contributions reaches $1,000.00 over a period of years.  For example, if an EP contributes $200.00 a year for five years, that person then becomes a member of the Octagon Club.

It is possible that you may qualify under these new guidelines and our records from the early years may not take into account your contributions made in past years.  If that is the case and you believe you qualify, please contact Tom Haller at tomhaller@earhtlink.net or Jerry Nairne at Jerome.Nairne@TPA4TSA.COM and we will correct this oversight immediately.  The members of the Octagon Club will be listed on the EP website under the menu heading “Guthrie Scholarship.”

March ’09 EP Alumni Basketball
4/7/2009

This year’s Alumni Basketball Game was a rousing success with well over 20 alumni showing up to see what the 30 or so actives had to offer in the way of hoops talent.  Needless to say, we were not disappointed.  The actives more than held their own, but as is usually the case, the mental toughness and veteran gamesmanship of the alumni were too much for our inexperienced opponents, at least for the first game.  After that, we got tired and had trouble keeping up with a bunch of twenty year olds who have not yet packed on an extra 15 to 20 pounds of winter insulation.   In the end, we played several games well into the afternoon before retiring to Rachel’s for dinner.  Ralph Carlson was on hand to update the alumni on all current fraternity matters.  Please try to make this event next year.  You will not be sorry.  It is the easiest to plan for with the least amount of commitment required.  You can show up

Wanted: An Internship for an EP Junior
4/7/2009

Ben Cratlesy, a junior EP from Pittsburgh, is seeking an internship for this coming summer as part of his graduation requirement.  Ben is an accounting major and well known to the EPAA Board as a leader in the fraternity.  If possible, the ideal opportunity would be either in Pittsburgh or the greater Pittsburgh surrounding area.  If you have such an opportunity, contact Ben directly at CRATSLEYBA1@GCC.EDU.  For those of you old enough to remember, Ben is the grandson of Mel Cratsley, the former basketball coach at Carnegie Tech, before it became known as Carnegie Mellon University.  If you have an opening for an internship, give Ben a shot!

Hans Sennholz Obituary
6/29/2007

Died June 23, 2007

Hans Sennholz, a retired Grove City College professor and a well-known and influential free-market economist whose libertarian and privatization philosophies influenced Reagan administration economic policies in the 1980s, died Saturday in Grove City Hospital following a brief and unspecified illness.

The following is from an article by Don Hopey published Monday, June 25, 2007 in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Obituary: Hans Sennholz / Former Grove City professor and influential economist

Died June 23, 2007

Hans Sennholz, a retired Grove City College professor and a well-known and influential free-market economist whose libertarian and privatization philosophies influenced Reagan administration economic policies in the 1980s, died Saturday in Grove City Hospital following a brief and unspecified illness.

Mr. Sennholz, 85, who taught economics at Grove City from 1956 until 1992 and was a proponent of Austrian economics, was a prolific writer and lecturer on a variety of economic, social and political issues, often flying his own plane to lecture destinations across the country.

“He was a big influence on ‘Reaganomics’ and the current conservative movement and helped in the resurgence of free-market economics, not only in the United States, but also in Eastern Europe, India and around the world,” said Camille Castorina, an economist and former student at Grove City.

She said he was a friend of Milton Friedman, the Nobel Prize-winning economist and proponent of laissez-faire economics, and an influence on Edwin Feulner, founder and president of the conservative Heritage Foundation, but never achieved their notoriety because he chose to remain at Grove City College, in Mercer County, teaching undergraduates.

“He preferred to teach undergraduates because they were more passionate about things and their minds were more malleable,” Ms. Castorina said. “He was very inspiring in the classroom, and taught many stockbrokers and bankers influential in the Pittsburgh banking community.”

A native of Germany who retained a slight German accent throughout his life, Mr. Sennholz was drafted into the German Luftwaffe during World War II and flew numerous missions as a fighter pilot in France, Russia and North Africa until he was shot down and captured. He spent the last part of the war in prisoner camps in the United States.

When the war was over, he went back to Germany where he received degrees at Marburg University and Cologne University. He returned to the United States in the early 1950s and studied at New York University, earning his doctorate in economics.

In his 37 years at Grove City, he taught more than 10,000 students, wrote more than 1,000 books, booklets and articles, and received numerous awards and honorary degrees.

Mary Sennholz, 93, his wife, said her husband met Ronald Reagan after a speech in the late 1970s in Honolulu. “It was after his time as California governor but before he was president,” she remembered yesterday. “We went up to him and I introduced my husband and Reagan knew him and said to him, ‘Well, hello. I’ve been plagiarizing your work in my newspaper column for years.’ My husband responded, “You’ve been reading good material.’ “

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Robert, of Grove City, and two grandsons.
